Join Uri L’Tzedek, Progressive Jewish Alliance & Jewish Funds for Justice in securing the rights of thousands of domestic workers across the country!
Today, there are more than 1.7 million home care workers who do not receive basic protections – minimum wage and overtime- afforded to most employees in the United States. That number is expected to rise dramatically as the number of Americans requiring long-term care is expected to nearly double by 2050. Many of these employees work extremely long hours, doing difficult labor, taking care of our children and elderly, two populations that are most cherished in Jewish tradition. Yet, because they are unprotected by the law, their holy work is often exploited.
This past December, the US Department of Labor proposed a rule change that that will grant home care workers minimum wage and overtime protections, rights which will provide them with the security and dignity they deserve. As is standard, the public is invited to submit comments on the proposed change. The time period to submit these comments ends on Feb 27th.
We have the opportunity to encourage these new laws to be passed. It is particularly important for Jewish professional and lay leaders to make vocally support these proposed changes.
