A private company called Corrections Corporation of America has proposed to buy and run prisons across
the United States — but only if state governments keep their prisons at least 90% full. This proposal gives
states a dangerous incentive to fill up their prisons, at a time when American incarceration rates are already
the highest in the world.

Jewish tradition on incarceration, as inspired by the Biblical models of Ir Miklat and Eved Knaani, seeks to
affirm the human dignity even of those who have erred. As Orthodox Jewish social justice activists, Uri
L’Tzedek believes there is no place in the Jewish tradition for the inhumanity of today’s mass
incarceration.
